About the Artist
Ryan Wunsch is an internationally published, award winning photographer and stormchaser based in Saskatchewan Canada who captures the beauty and spirit of the prairies. He discovered his passion for photography in high school where he used the dark room to develop from film. He bought his first digital camera in 1999 and was soon hooked on the concept.
He enjoys the beauty of the Canadian Prairies and doesn’t have to drive very far to find something that interests him to photograph. His favorite subjects are summer storms, abandoned relics and prairie landscapes. Ryan waits for unique opportunities, interesting clouds and just the right light. When the days light has ended he enjoys capturing starry skies, the aurora and moonlit scenes. Each year he travels to Tornado Alley and across the Canadian Prairies in search of beautiful storms.
Ryan’s photography has been featured with interviews by The Weather Network, Huffington Post, CBC News, The StarPhoenix, The Leader Post, The Camera Store, Viewbug, Technicare, and and in a photo essay on The Chive
In 2016 the photo “They’re Here…” was awarded Top Shot by National Geographic. The same photo was awarded Photo of the day by the Smithsonian and featured on The Atlantic for being in the running for National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year
In 2017 Ryan got his Bucket List Shot right at home in Leader! The shot was picked Editors favorite in the National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition. It went on to win Canadian Geographic 32nd photo competition, and followed up with articles in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader post.
2018 was a year to save on fuel costs – most of the storms were in the Northern Plains. Some of Ryan’s favorite pictures were taken very close to home including “Highway to Hail” which was awarded a National Geographic Top Shot. Access TV released a 1 hour documentary special “Spirit of the Prairies” profiling Ryan’s favorite shots as he was interviewed about them.
Early 2019 “The Heavens Opened Up” taken as the same storm was initiating behind the little old country church Ryan has been documenting – was chosen for the National Geographic story “My Best Photos of 2018” and announced winner of Canadian Geographics 33rd Annual Photo Competition. The little church turns 100 years old this year!
Ryan’s photos and articles have been published in a variety of magazines including Canadian Geographic, Outdoor Photography Canada, PhotoNews and Prairies North.
